Scientists warn of 'global climate emergency' over shifting jet stream

From the Independent:

"Two environmentalists have declared a “global climate emergency” after the Northern hemisphere jet stream was found to have crossed the equator, bringing “unprecedented” changes to the world’s weather patterns.

Robert Scribbler and University of Ottawa researcher Paul Beckwith warned of the “weather-destabilising and extreme weather-generating” consequences of the jet stream shift.

However other scientists dismissed their claims, with one describing their concern over wind crossing the equator as "total nonsense".

Scribbler and Beckwith said the anomalies were most likely precipitated by man-made climate change, which caused the jet stream to slow down and create larger waves." [More]

Nevertheless, this is one of the changes predicted by Peter Wadhams and other 'boots on the ground' scientists who believe there will be an 'abrupt climate change', where isolated areas will experience rapid change, rather than that predicted by the IPCC model that is based on a gradual and even progression throughout the world. In the Northern Hemisphere this change will be exagerrated because of the melting of sea ice in the Arctic.

This article caused something of an internet sensation when it was reported in the Washington Post - until the 'other scientists dismissed their claims'. However, Beckwith has issued a statement saying that the article was posted to the papers internet site before he had had a chance to comment on its content - having been asked to comment little more than an hour before it was put online. His response can be found here.
