Sweden's prime minister announced his country will work towards becoming 'one of the first fossil fuel-free welfare states of the world'
This seems an excellent ambition - considering that it is becoming increasingly obvious that climate change is occurring much faster than was originally predicted. Given the circumstances - it would be helpful if a wealthy individual, who is concerned about global warming, created a 'David Attenborough Trophy' [or in the name of another leading environmentalist] to be presented each year to the leader of the nation that was leading this race.
Little chance of the UK winning in the near future - judging by this table showing the extent of renewable energy use just within the EU nations.
If such a competition captured the public's imagination in enough countries - it is likely that there would be the necessary significant reduction in the burning of fossil fuels necessary if global warming is not to see the planet inhabitable by mankind and many other species.
